Phases of Matter

There are five Phases of Matter that exist in our universe.

In science, we will be learning about the three most common phases; solids, liquids, and gases.

Watch this video for a brief introduction to the phases of matter:

What you should know or be able to do:

1. The three phases of matter.

2. How matter changes phase.

3. The names for the different processes that occur when the matter changes phase.

4. How the density of matter changes when phases change.

5. Explain the motion of the atoms or molecules as they change phases.

Heat Transfer

Heat Transfer occurs in three ways:

Conduction - the transfer of heat through contact from warmer substance to cooler substance.

Convection - the transfer of heat in a liquid or gas due to changes in density.

Radiation - the transfer of heat as infrared light (no matter necessary to carry heat).
