Our Matter Vocabulary List
In class this past week, we generated our own list of vocabulary for the unit on Matter. Please note that these are working definitions and are not likely to match dictionary definitions for the same words. This Matter Vocabulary List will be updated and added to as we continue our learning.

Periodic Table of the Elements
Check out this link to an interactive version of the Periodic Table of the Elements that we are using in class.
There are tons of interesting facts about the elements that you can learn!
You can also watch and listen to this animation. It's a really fun way to hear almost all of the names of the elements:

Molecules in Motion
Check out this really cool applet that shows molecules in motion!
You can adjust the size of the particles, the number of particles and how hot the environment is!

Phases of Matter
There are five Phases of Matter that exist in our universe.
In science, we will be learning about the three most common phases; solids, liquids, and gases.
Watch this video for a brief introduction to the phases of matter:

What you should know or be able to do:
1. The three phases of matter.
2. How matter changes phase.
3. The names for the different processes that occur when the matter changes phase.
4. How the density of matter changes when phases change.
5. Explain the motion of the atoms or molecules as they change phases.

Heat Transfer
Heat Transfer occurs in three ways:
Conduction - the transfer of heat through contact from warmer substance to cooler substance.
Convection - the transfer of heat in a liquid or gas due to changes in density.
Radiation - the transfer of heat as infrared light (no matter necessary to carry heat).
Recent questions that your children should be able to answer:
Why do polar bears have black skin and clear, hollow fur?
Explain how thermos bottles keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold.

Molecules In Motion
MOLECULES IN MOTION
How does heat affect matter? What's going on with the atoms and molecules? How does heat affect the density of a substance?
These are just a few of the questions your child should be able to answer!
In class today, we added drops of food coloring to water of different temperatures.
Ask your child which one was the hot water and which one was the colder water and have them explain the differences!

APPLE MUMMIES
Students have had the "organs" of their apples removed and covered them with differing amounts of natron. Each week, we will remove the mummies from their sarcophagus and make some measurements and observations to see how the amount of natron affects the change in mass of the mummy.
In science, students are working on an interdisciplinary project. We are mummifying apples in conjunction with the social studies unit on ancient Egypt!
